In Auckland, it’s not always easy to find affordable places that feel like a “proper” sit-down dinner. Dominion Road is great for that quick bite, but at the end of the night we always find ourselves restaurant hopping or going to somewhere else for drinks. So I’m quick to share when I find a good place for food and ambience.
First of all, the name: Thai Street. No it is not on Thai Street. Don’t enter it on the GPS.
The name suggests authentic Thai street food. I like it, not fancy fusion or modern Thai food but the heart warming and satisfying Thai cuisine that I always crave. While I wouldn’t say it’s street food, it’s the same good quality you would find at their partner restaurants Grasshopper and Mai Thai in Auckland CBD.
As well as your average beers and wines, the cocktail and mocktail list gives you plenty of choice. With the mocktails being only $6.50 I ended up having 2! I’d recommend the coconut one on the left, creamy and dense, it’s not your average drink you can order at other places. Be careful not to drink it all before dinner like I did though..
There were big satisfying pieces of pork belly in this. I had to ask for a knife to to make my way through it. If your group likes sharing plates, I’d recommend this, otherwise it can get too rich to eat alone as a main. I wished I could stomach more coconut rice with this because the combo is to love. The sauce was sweet and the pork and potatoes inside was totally soaked through.
The pad thai was a little average and mass produced. A generous dousing of chilli sauce was my tame attempt to dress it up but I couldn’t do much more. The other food like curries were flavoursome and plenty of fresh veggies came with the Emerald Duck.
I’d recommend Thai Street for the price vs value in a good location. Like other restaurants in Wynyard Quarter, it’s worth booking before going. The staff were friendly and attentive and you can stay long enough to have a drink after. Have a try and let me know what you think!
