First up in the series of Quick Bites out South is none other than Urban Soul. With the decor being so clean, modern and classy – I’ve had numerous recommendations for this cafe for my lunchtime escapades. This is the reality. Lunchtimes = wolfing down a packed lunch before donning the hi vis vest for duty around the school. But don’t swallow too fast, indigestion never goes down well for the last teaching block. Therefore when the stars align (or non-duty days with other teachers align), you make the escape to treat yourself a decent lunch outside.
Tips to make that escape:
1. Pre-order. As much as teachers dread that word “planning”, it IS all about planning. Especially if you’re going to a busy cafe, there will be zero time to eat otherwise. Have a look at the menu online and ring in during morning tea.
2. Reserve a seat. This ties in with pre-ordering. If you’ve phoned in for a meal request, they’ll hopefully also save you a table.
3. Drop and go. This goes without saying. If you work in the middle of nowhere like me, the average drive is 10min. Some simple Maths 10 x 2 = 20min out. That’s almost half the lunchtime gone.
As daunting and rushed as it sounds, it IS worth the effort to go and freshen yourself – regain that sense of head space without the sounds of screaming children outside.
I’ve successfully made a few escapes this year and Urban Soul has so far been my favourite. Word of caution: it gets packed. So to be presented with your meal as soon as you sit down makes you feel like royalty.
While it was busy, the owner made the effort to come by our table to make sure the food was ok. The Thai prawn noodle fritters were delish! Something different outside of your cafe food norm. As the owner explained, she gives the chefs room to experiment and this goes to show what trust can do for creativity. The combination of the fragrant herbs and mango slaw was spectacular.
The mushroom risotto was a treat. The consistency wasn’t too soft, something I’m always wary of because it can wipe out all texture in the dish. The olive oil gave it a smooth viscosity, so pace yourself while eating this or it’ll get rich too quickly. And of course, a getaway wouldn’t be complete without something to takeaway. I was spoilt for choice at the cabinet options but “old fashioned cheesecake (not cheesecake)” caught my eye. Indeed, it was more of a sponge inside.
Treat in hand, I felt very successful heading back to school before the dreaded second bell. It certainly set the expectation for other getaways ahead.
I’d love to have more recommendations for eateries out South. Drop a comment below and let us know!
