Tom Tom’s Pop-up Garden Party

Thanks to the low hanging grey clouds lately, it hasn’t really felt like much of spring in Auckland. My pasty legs are in serious need of some summer loving!

Luckily last Sunday was the launch of Tom Tom’s Pop-up Garden Party. Held on the outdoor balcony of the bar and eatery, it was the perfect excuse to slip on the summer dress and remind myself what sunblock smells like.

The 1920’s pop-up garden party was part of the re-brand of Cointreau and the launch of the Cointreau Fizz drink. A part of the balcony was decked out with grass, white picket fences and garden games for everyone.

Expecting your average bar food, the desserts surprised me with the attention to detail and beautiful presentation. Head chef Frasier Shenton had it spot on with the Popcorn Brulee which is essentially a deconstructed salted caramel creme brulee. While it didn’t come with whole popcorn kernels as I expected, the light crumbles of popcorn represented the dish well.

When the hot chocolate pudding came out on the board, it was really quite a sight. Delicately laid out like artwork, we had to quickly demolish it since the ice cream melted so fast under the sun. This of course left the self-saucing chocolate pudding on its own to devour, which quickly got too  sweet and rich towards the end.

I’m loving the new contemporary dining scene without the pretentiousness of fancy restaurants. With the urban pulse away from the rush of central Auckand CBD, Tom Tom would be a great venue for summer lunches or nights out.

To catch the next garden party, here are the upcoming dates:
