A break from Skyscrapers – Number 5 Restaurant

We had the amazing opportunity to go to No.5 for their 5 course degustation menu- one day before the much anticipated Rugby World Cup hit Auckland. Right across from Langham Hotel, No.5 looks like a cozy restaurant from the outside. A brick house in the middle of the busy CBD that’s full of high-rise buildings and modern architecture.

The great thing about degustation menus? You don’t have to spend time choosing what to eat! And you can relax knowing all the dishes on the menu were handpicked by the chef to complement each other.

Upstairs, we were led into the couples den. The atmosphere was like Wine Chambers without the awkwardness. Gentle light and tables of 2 in a separate area make this the perfect venue for romantic special occasions.

A crackling fireplace,  golden chandelier, an ornamented mirror…what can make a restaurant classier? This has an atmosphere that will scream: “that special occasion” in your memories.

Duck liver parfait with Cranberry compote, crisp bread

Just the perfect portion! The cranberry eased the richness of the parfait and I loved the simple and elegant presentation.

Seared scallops with Quail eggs, pea puree, pancetta


This was probably one of the prettiest messy-dishes I’ve seen. Mix egg, puree, scallops together and you pretty much have just completed the dish! Looked so complicated though…Lemoncello Sorbet

Would you say this counts as a course? Felt like a slightly large palate cleanser to me – but still refreshing; something good right before the start of the evening!

Venison Rump with Butternut, black pudding, caramelised onion jus

WOOOOOWWW!!!!!! The star of the evening: Venison. I’m always up for venison – red meat that’s lean. But for me it always has to be combined with a jus or a sauce just so it’s not too dry – the simple onion jus did the trick, with the butternut adding more colour.

The main I noticed from all the courses was how exquisite and delicate the dishes were presented- yet somehow they all used very few ingredients. Such simple dishes made to perfection.

Chocolate and Raspberry fondant with Raspberry ripple ice cream

Cecilia’s pick for the evening. The chocolate lava cake was a delight. When you gently slice into the chocolate cake, the warm chocolate centre spilled out beautifully. Definitely a chocolate lover’s special. It was very very sweet and rich, so the fruity ice cream was a good complement. The mixture of crispy, soft moist textures with the hot and cold temperature was perfect finish.

Into reality again! No.5’s 5 course degustation menu is perfect for those who love to try a bit of everything. If you’re living in the CBD it almost feels like an escape into somewhere classical and cozy, rather than the modern themed restaurants.
