Auckland’s best picnic spots

Now that the weather’s perking up to summer, it’s safe to ditch the puffy jackets and permanently live in shorts and jandals. And what better way to spend the weekend than a spontaneous picnic to get that much needed tan?

As much as we love splurging it out on champagne, deli meats and cheeses, for the more realistic and budget conscious us – we love to mix and match cafe food with our favourite fruit and drinks.

Here’s our picnic kit for the lazy Sunday afternoon:

Little & Friday savoury brioche and chocolate chilli donut – if you’ve tried their cream donuts, this is a must!

– Puhoi Valley blue cheese

– Couple of strawberry punnets

– Frozen orchard gold berries

– Bach Espresso coffee – some of us have had a late night before..

– Rekorderlig pear cider – on the hunt for the new passionfruit flavour

– Fish and Chips – some people might disagree, but to me no picnic is right without fish and chips!

Now for our Top 6 picnic spots around Auckland:

1. Albert Park – Auckland CBD

There’s something special about escaping the city buzz in the middle of the CBD. It’s a great meetup point if you’re planning on meeting with friends from different sides of Auckland.

2. Cornwall park – Greenlane

It’s a popular spot during October for cherry blossoms and in summer it’s got everything you want for a picnic – including sheep and cows casually grazing next to you.

3. Long Bay Regional Park

If you’re more keen for some meat with your picnic, Long Bay has the beach, BBQ stoves and plenty of grass areas to whip out your picnic rug.

4. North Head РDevonport

This is great for the kids so they can climb on the cannons and explore the tunnels while you relax over the Waitemata Harbour view.

5. Takapuna Beach

Takapuna is where we head to the most, there’s BBQ stoves near the Takapuna Beach Cafe and plenty of water-based activities for you to try like paddle boarding.

6. Mission Bay

We’re not there too often, but it’s perfect when you don’t want to go too far from the CBD. Why there? Fish and Chips. No casual picnic can go without fish and chips, ask any Kiwi and they’ll agree!

…And best of all, the ice cream at Takapuna Beach Cafe!
